Claire Pope: Alters
Masur Museum Downstairs, Main House
June 10, 2027 – August 13, 2027
Public Reception: TBA
Claire Pope’s work explores the notion of quietude and wonder as found in Nature during the present Anthropocene Age. Alters presents the viewer with an internal exploration of the relationship between the majesty of the land and the alteration of the earth by humans.
Having grown up in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky, Pope’s connection to the large sweeping vistas of rolling green hills and vast domes of sky is engrained in my being. Pope’s understanding of that land is influenced by industrial progress and the violent stripping of coal mining and quarries. The title Alters is a play on words; altars to altered states of the earth.
Generous support for this exhibition and a corresponding publication has been provided by Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.
